No ensino-aprendizagem de língua estrangeira, o contato com o folclore das culturas oriundas de países falantes de língua inglesa é muito importante. De fato muitas crianças, e também alguns adultos sequer imaginam que as cantigas, jogos e outras atividades ministradas durante as aulas de ensino de língua estrangeira são também uma forma de literatura. Há uma grande quantidade de histórias, tradições e costumes provenientes de nossa infância, transmitidas de geração para geração.

O tongue-twister, ou trava-línguas como é chamado na língua portuguesa, também faz parte da cultura folclórica de diversos países do mundo e nada mais é do que uma frase ou texto escrito muito difícil de pronunciar corretamente. Muitos tongue-twisters são uma combinação de aliteração* e ritmo. Possuem duas ou três seqüências de som, depois a mesma seqüência de sons com alguns deles trocados. Por exemplo: She sells sea shells on a sea shore, so the shells she sells are sure sea shore shells.

*Aliteração
Recurso de estilo do nível fonológico, que consiste na repetição de fonemas, como recurso para intensificação do ritmo, ou como efeito sonoro significativo. Exs.: "Galgam os gatos, guturais, gritando" - António Feijó, "Na messe, que enlourece, estremece a quermesse..." - Eugénio de Castro, etc.

How much wood would a woodchuck chuck
if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
He would chuck, he would, as much as he could,
and chuck as much wood as a woodchuck would
if a woodchuck could chuck wood.

Black bug bit a big black bear. But where is the big black bear
that the big black bug bit?
A big bug bit the little beetle but the little beetle bit the big bug back.

Ruby Rugby`s brother bought and brought her
back some rubber baby-buggy bumpers.

A flea and a fly flew up in a flue.
Said the flea, "Let us fly!"
Said the fly, "Let us flee!"

So they flew through a flaw in the flue.
She sells sea shells by the sea shore.
The shells she sells are surely seashells.
So if she sells shells on the seashore,
I`m sure she sells seashore shells.

Black bug bit a big black bear. But where is the big black bear that the big black bug bit? A big bug bit the little beetle but the little beetle bit the big bug back.
